Barred owls are rare in Boise, though they have been expanding their range westward over the last century. Unbeknownst to me, one had dropped by my neighborhood, causing quite a stir among birders.

I serendipitously discovered it as I was heading home from a fruitless photography outing, and was considerably more surprised than the owl by our encounter. It seemed entirely unbothered by my presence, maintaining a stoic, over-the-shoulder gaze that suggested I was the one out of place. I was definitely pleased to have made its acquaintance, and I kept its location to myself to afford it some well-deserved privacy.
