Is the Sky Falling?

Price range: $75.00 through $349.00

Although there is little resemblance to Chicken Little, this Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) reminded me of the children’s story by its inquisitive upward gaze.  Who knows whether it was surveying the weather, checking for predators, or hoping for a divine supply of crustaceans to fall from the sky – however, it was clearly contemplating something.

I found the shorebird’s elegant mid-stride pose, its long decurved beak glistening with grains of sand, and its well-defined graceful long shadow on the beach to be riveting.  After all, how often do we get to observe a species doing something unexpected?
