When is a still life not a still life? At first glance, you might assume this is a simple composition of two empty shells resting on the sand. In reality, the larger shell is very much occupied by a fully functioning, if slightly stranded, sea snail.
Beachcombing is a cherished pastime, but these days I know better than to collect intact shells; they are far too valuable as real estate for hermit crabs. Finding one with its original inhabitant on the shore is rarer still. This individual was discovered on a tiny island in Tonga that only exists at low tide, turning the mollusc into a temporary landlubber, patiently waiting for the ocean to return and “rescue” it.
It is a quiet study of a creature that is completely foreign to us in every way, reminding us that life comes in all shapes and forms, yet is no less worthy than we are.
