Synergy

$75.00

How often do you get the opportunity to stare directly into the eyes of a wild creature? Or, more to the point, how often do you consider that you are just as much a subject in their gaze as they are in yours? Take this female Wood duck (Aix sponsa) for example. While I was focused on the intricate textures of her gorgeous golden-rimmed eye, she was intently focused on me—and, more importantly, on her ducklings scurrying nearby.

There is a profound synergy in this exchange. If we spent more time making eye contact with other species, we might realize how similar our basic instincts for safety and familiarity are. It’s a silent conversation that suggests a deeper respect for the daily struggles and vigilance required of all wildlife. She wasn’t just posing for a portrait; she was assessing whether I was a possible threat or harmless observer. Thankfully, she decided on the latter and continued to let her babies run around me.
