A spotted sandpiper next to the Boise River in Boise, Idaho, puffs up to appear menacing before assessing that there is no danger.

Spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularius) are unusual in that the male takes care of the young. This proud papa was doing an admirable job raising two chicks.
