Cerulean Treasure

Price range: $75.00 through $249.00

Pinecones and brilliant green pine needles punctuate a Lazuli Bunting seeking a mate in the Idaho Botanical Gardens.

Did you know that the namesake of this stunning songbird is derived from the deep blue gemstone lapis lazuli, which possesses a similar brilliant blue hue to that of the male of the species?

But these birds are more than just pretty plumage; they are also seasoned deejays of the avian world. Male Lazuli Buntings create their own unique, complex songs by aggressively remixing tunes they overhear from other males in the area. The fascinating result of this neighborhood collaboration is that they become highly tolerant of those who sing familiar local hits, while adopting a strict “stranger danger” policy toward outsiders with unfamiliar melodies. It is a very exclusive club, and I was lucky enough to get a temporary backstage pass.  Next stop, Ibiza?
