The Essence of Symmetry
Price range: $75.00 through $399.00
The Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) is a stunning pollinator that graces much of western North America, including, on one particularly fortunate afternoon, my own backyard. This individual seemed remarkably aware of their own aesthetic appeal, posing for me to capture the mirrored perfection.
There is a strange paradox in this composition. Butterflies have been refined by evolution since the Jurassic period, as evidenced by fossils —surviving mass extinctions while maintaining a precise, bilateral artistry. Yet, despite their prehistoric stamina, the lifespan of a single butterfly is just a few weeks. It is a fleeting masterpiece of 200-million-year-old symmetry and color. Blink, and you will miss it.
