The term “speed demon” probably does not leap to mind when thinking of a ghost crab. Nevertheless, these quirky crustaceans are extraordinarily fast. They can clock top speeds of 10 to 12 mph when darting away from danger. To put that into perspective, they move at about 100 body-lengths per second. For a human to match that relative pace, you would have to sprint at hundreds of miles per hour.
This particular fellow was high-tailing it across the sand like a bank robber making a frantic getaway. To achieve this kind of extreme velocity, it actually lifted its hind legs completely off the sand, sprinting like an aerodynamic maniac using only its first and second pairs of legs.
I took this photograph on a tiny, fleeting sandbar in the Vava’u island group of Tonga—a unique ecosystem that only exists during high tide.
