This image presents an illusion. It depicts a bucolic scene of a mother golden-mantled howler monkey cradling her infant against a vibrant, sun-drenched canopy—an idyllic template for motherhood in nature.

But photography can be masterfully deceptive. A slice of time frozen into perpetuity cannot convey the whole story.

The lens has omitted a heartbreaking reality. The baby has a massive tumor on its chest, and it is uncertain to know if she will survive to adulthood.

I titled the image Compassion, not because of the clear love the mother has for her child, but because of the emotional connection I felt towards her, and the unfairness of her situation.
